Rapid prototyping is a group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data. Construction of the part or assembly is usually done using 3D printing or “additive layer manufacturing” technology.

This is a fast-emerging technology which is finding its way into manufacturing addressing various industries. In the Rapid Prototyping (RPT) Lab the students are though how to design and manufacture using the RPT Machine.



Additive layer manufacturing refer to process by which 3D Design data is converted into a 3D Object by adding layer upon layer of material whether the material is plastic, metal, concrete ,etc.

Rapid Prototyping Vs Additive Manufacturing

(I) Rapid Prototyping:
Rapid Prototyping used to generate non structural and non functional demo pieces.

(ii)Additive Manufacturing:
Additive Manufacturing used as a real scalable manufacturing process, to generate fully functional final components.
